Well, here we are again. Maybe you are sitting in your lazy boy reclining chair (the one with the naugahyde cover and the brown duct tape over the hole in the cushion) with your legs propped up, and a nice cool soda on the arm of the chair, just a little bit flat, but still quite refreshing-- water beading on the glass and dripping onto the vinyl cushion making a little puddle there on the nauga...and maybe you're flipping through the channels with your remote control checking out the new fall season and you are asking yourself whether you really need to get up and out and go to the Upper West Side to hear the DAVID BERKMAN TRIO THIS THURSDAY. No one can answer this question for you--you have to answer this question for yourself-- but in the words of perhaps the greatest commercial of all time (the slow jam CD collection of soul hits which cannot be purchased in any stores) 'my brother, you got(s) to get your own' and in this case, I mean: you got(s) to get your own earful of the DAVID BERKMAN TRIO. Thursday it's my old pal the great Gene Jackson on drums and the also great Josh Ginsburg on bass and did I happen to mention that there is no cover charge (not even a little one)? Gene is fresh back from Japan--if you smell him very carefully you can still detect the faint lingering scent of cherry blossoms, Hello Kitty merchandise and high-end electronics. And I'm not sure where Josh Ginsburg is coming from but let me assure you that he is also an extremely pleasant smelling man. SO get up out of that chair, however comfortable it may be. Set the DVD recorder so that you don't miss Dancing with the Stars of Kickboxing and then pick yourself up, yes...stand up and walk...you can do it. WALK! Maybe you're a little shaky at first but keep putting one foot in front of the other as you get the hang of it again...walk. WALK dammit. There, doesn't that feel better? Walk straight to XXX and Broadway, don't stop. Don't let inertia get you. Don't overthink it--just walk straight into the club, pull up a stool and plunk down nothing on the bar for the cover and then think about what beverage you'd like to drink while we tune up. We'll be waiting for you--we're not going to start until each and every one of you are ensconced at the bar and maybe not even then (we’re funny that way.)
